Vintage Vargas Manufacturing Company "J" Monogrammed Sterling Silver Signet Ring

Vargas Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island was founded in 1947. Becoming a prominent American jewelry maker known for high-quality sterling silver and gold-filled pieces. This ring is hallmarked Sterling and exhibits the logo, a V on top of a diamond image. The "J" is sterling and is screwed on to a piece of black onyx. Vargas was particularly famous for their monogrammed signet rings, widely sold in department stores across the U.S. and through mail-order catalogs. There is a screwed-on assembly at the back of the ring which was a standard practical solution for retailers in the 1950s. It is less common in more modern pieces where casting or permanent adhesives were used. This ring is a classic piece of Mid-Century Americana and was produced sometime in the 1950s or 1960s.
