Vintage Mid-Century Modern Sigi Pineda Double Hinge Bangle
This is such an iconic piece of mid-century Mexican modernist jewelry. Designed by the legendary Mexican modernist designer, Sigi Pineda, born Sigfrido Pineda in 1929, this style is a much-celebrated double-hinged asymmetrical bangle. Mr. Pineda worked in Taxco, Mexico and was deeply influenced by the early Mexican silver renaissance. In the 1950s, he decided to break away from traditional, bulky Mexican designs and patterns to establish his own avant-garde workshop while silversmithing at William Spratling's renowned Plateria Las Delicias.
Gemstone: The Platería Las Delicias (or Las Delicias Workshop) was the first artisan silver workshop in Taxco, Guerrero, Mexico, founded in 1931 by the American William Spratling. This historic workshop revolutionized the Mexican silver industry, fusing pre-Hispanic motifs with modern designs and training legendary master silversmiths. His older cousin, Antonio Pineda, was one of the earliest apprentices who helped build the workshop's initial success. Sigi Pineda eventually worked at the Taller de Las Delicias as a young prodigy, beginning as a child apprentice and becoming a master silversmith by age 15. Sigi is celebrated for founding his own independent workshop, "Sigi," in 1952. He moved away from Spratling's traditional pre-Hispanic styles to become the pioneer of the sleek, mid-century Mexican Modernism movement.
This specific design number 305 (see photo) is from circa 1960 to 1965. So gently preloved and magnificent. There are signs of normal wear and tear. All hinges are working and under tight tension. A gorgeous piece of Mexican modernist history and art to wear on your wrist
